The Sin of Sloth?

Tuesday, October, 28, 2008
Trying to be Wonder Woman can be more than just exhausting, it can be downright depressing...

During a recent chat with my mom, the subject of the Seven Deadly Sins came up. After she challenged me to name them off the top of my head, I gave up somewhere around number five. So, I retreated to my faithful friend Google, to find the answer.

1. Lust
2. Gluttony
3. Greed
4. Sloth
5. Wrath
6. Envy
7. Pride

Anyway, if you are anything like me, number 4 raised an eyebrow.

Sloth, meaning sadness or despair, is also defined by Wikipedia as melancholy: apathy, depression and joylessness… a refusal to enjoy the goodness of the world.

Really? Could sorrow truly be a sin?

Religious views aside, I must admit that this idea intriguing to me. Why?

Well, over the last year, my path has been on the rocky side. And, after the most recent blow, the gloom appeared to be getting the best of me.

Now, I am sure that most (if not all) of us have experienced periods of depression in our life. So, what do you think?

Of course, as far as the answer is concerned, I don't have the slightest clue.

However, what I do know is that… Yesterday, I said, "screw it!" and decided to be happy no matter what. The result? A great day; full of laughs, frozen custard and even some good ol' work.

So, maybe, you can control minor spurts of depression; maybe you can't. But, either way, making the conscious effort to be happy made for quite a mental vacation, so if you need a pick me up… I say, "treat your self today!" :)

It is like I always say, "Don't expect someone to make you happy because they can't. You have to make yourself happy." I truly believe that your attitude can change your mood from happy to sad and back again. I try to enjoy each day because one day I may just regret having spent a day in a sad/mopey mood. ~Jenn

I think that if you are suffering from depression (whether it is long term, clinical depression or temporary, situational depression) it is sometimes impossible to just make up your mind to feel better and have it happen. Yes, it does help, but sometimes you just feel so low that you are ready to give up and on those days nothing you tell yourself makes a difference. Is it still sinful if you have no control over it? As for the sin of sloth, I don't know where I got it from, but for some reason I always associated it more with laziness. While depression can make you incapable of performing even the simplest tasks, laziness is more of a refusal to do them, which seems pretty sinful to me.

Been there, and if it's situational then it is a mental thing that we have to allow to be and not identify with. If it's long-term, which I've never suffered, then help should be sought. Naima "feel the fear and do it any damn way!"
