Skirt Bookclub
I'm relatively new to this, so bear with me. As you now know, I'm the new book club at skirt! I'm single at the present time, but have TONS of friends and am attracted to anything with 2 covers (front and back), with lots of flippy pages in between. Call me crazy..... I like to spend my time in boo...

An Honest Moment

Saturday, July, 5, 2008
Ladies, ladies, ladies. I am going to take a minute to lament the fact that I lost so many of you during the reading of this most depressing book that I chose for our first Skirt! book club selection. I am sorry. It's not that it isn't a wonderful book, it is. Just not one that prompts happy discussions that we look forward to having, which is the very reason I wanted to read books together, all at the same time. If you happen to still be reading Autobiography, continue doing so, but at a frantic pace. Finish it. At the same time, begin thinking about a new, possibly happier, less suicidal book that we can enjoy together. I just picked up The Time Traveler's Wife and fell in love with it after the first paragraph. It is smart, beautiful, funny, moving.... all that we could be looking for. Even better, come up with a suggestion for our summer read. That way I won't feel so completely responsible for the outcome. Like I do now. :) I'm REALLY looking forward to a new beginning.... ~Pamela

I read *Autobiography of a Face* several years ago after hearing the author interviewed on Fresh Air. I bought the book and liked it. But this year I read Ann Patchett's *Truth and Beauty* -- a memoir of her friendship with Grealy. It was gripping, especially with the context of having read Grealy's own words of her experience. It was fascinating to read a totally different perspective. I hope readers will stick with Grealy's book and then get Ann's (who also wrote the fabulous *Bel Canto.* KristinDREAM www.seren.us www.dreamrescue.org

The whole reason that I wanted AOF to be the first book that we read as a bookclub was because I read Truth and Beauty, then became obsessed with Lucy's story. It was a BEAUTIFUL story of love and friendship. I have Bel Canto waiting in the wings, but am, at the moment, in love with The Time Traveler's Wife. Let's keep the conversation open.....

I know it's not exactly a fun beach read, but I am really enjoying Autobiography of a Face. I should be finished in the next day or so. I started reading "I Was Told There'd Be Cake," a smart but hilarious book. Maybe we could read that at some point. It's by Sloane Crosley, who's like a young, female David Sedaris, if that makes sense. writeous babe

Where are you in the book? It seems that you, Angelia, Heather and I are the only ones reading, so I would like to schedule a wrap-up date, possibly next week sometime. "I Was Told There'd Be Cake" sounds good to me! I need to get to the bookstore, or check it out on Amazon.
