Affirmation and artwork by: Patricia J. Mosca

Welcome to From the Inside Out…A place where we will explore the power of positive affirmations writing from YOU to YOU.

I hope that you are getting familiar with writing your gratitude list. You should start to find doing that a little easier and a little more comfortable for your self. By starting small with the gratitude list you begin to use a positive tone for your self. You begin to train your mind to look for the positive that surrounds you. You begin to listen to your heart for the signs and signals of what truly makes you happy.

Today, we are going to proceed to prepare our self for keeping those thoughts, messages, and positive affirmations in a journal.

Lesson 6

Preparation

Buying a journal

It does not matter what kind of journal you purchase, it should just feel good to you. You can make one also, which is what I do. I happen to like heavy paper so I buy 140 weight watercolor papers and cut it to a workable size for myself. I leave the pages loose till the end of the year and then I have them bound and put together in book form. However, it does not matter if it is lined paper or card stock, or a notebook. The point is that you have a “special” place where your affirmations will go. I like to do artwork with mine, but not everyone feels comfortable with this. You can doodle on the page or put pictures from a magazine or pictures of yourself or what your dream may be. Making it personal makes it more of YOU. By personalizing it the journal becomes a sacred place that holds your positive intentions for yourself. Use a pen that will not bleed through the page if you have thin paper in your journal. Use crayons…magic markers…colored pencils…whatever feels comfortable to you on any given day.

What to put in your journal

Coming to the first page of your journal it is always nice to write a note to yourself. You can include things like, when you started the journal, why you started the journal or a simple inscription to your self. I usually start mine with a simple: “TO: MELOVE: ME…A space of my own making.”
I have been doing it the same way for years. (it just seems to work for me)

Once you have done that you can choose to date your entries or not, that is entirely up to you. I do suggest that you date them in the beginning because it is interesting to watch yourself grow within several weeks, within a month, and within a year.

1. Start by making small lists in your journal of the things you are grateful for.

2. Make lists of things you have been successful at, that you praise yourself for, and that are important to you.

3. Write down what you dream about for yourself, any goals you have for yourself.

4. Write down poetry if you choose.

5. Acknowledge any of the affirmations that have brought you to a higher level of positive emotions for yourself.

Starting a ritual

Doing affirmations is a powerful tool for self discovery and happiness. By making a ritual of it, you begin to realize that it is an experience that deserves to be treated as special. Think of how you celebrate birthdays, holidays, and special events. There are cards, and balloons, cake, ice cream and celebration. This should be treated the same way.

1. Buy yourself a special candle to light before you start your affirmation process. Light this every time you begin to write in your journal. The smell of the candle will bring you to the positive state each time it is lit as it will trigger your memory.

2. Sit in a comfortable chair and release any stress you may have from your day. Take some deep breaths and close your eyes. Relax and enjoy the process.

3. Do the affirmation around the same time every day. This makes it a promise that you have given yourself to honor yourself and that this is important to you.

4. Give yourself 15 minutes alone. If you have to go into a bedroom or another room to get away from TV noise or others than take the 15 minutes for yourself. This is not a selfish act. For if you are happier, those around you will notice and be happier also.

5. Some like to play soothing music…It is best that if you choose to play music that there are only instruments playing without words, or perhaps you would choose to listen to a CD of nature if that is what brings you to a peaceful state of mind. Again, the choice is totally yours; I like silence when I am listening to my inner voice.

I cannot emphasize enough that there is NO RIGHT WAY or WRONG WAY to do the journaling. Find what works for you and then stick to it, even if you are only giving yourself 5 minutes a day to do this. I spend a total of 20 minutes, start to finish, with my affirmation and that includes the small mandala painting that is within a 4 inch circle.

It is my greatest hope that you are starting to understand the positive energy of what an affirmation journal can bring your way. That by staying the course and reworking your thinking from a negative to a positive you will see the benefits of your happiness of life.

Start to prepare your self, your journal, and your space for this wonderful adventure that you are embarking on. Today, I send you a peaceful thought full of positive energy to guide you to finding all the things to help you on your path.

Artfully Yours,
Patricia
